Community and Family

As an educational leader strong relationships with families and the community are essential. As leader department leader and student organization advisory I have had the opportunity to promote my program and organization to students, parents, business, and community members on several occasions. My presence at our annual open house and parent teacher conferences gives me the important opportunity to share with parents exactly what it is their son or daughter will be doing in my career and technical education classes. During this time I also get the opportunity to interact with parents and share my praises and concerns regarding their child.

The Elective Fair is a fairly new event that take place during 8th grade orientation. I have had a part in the planning an organization of this event that allows future students and parents to view the elective classes available in high school. Future students and parents have an opportunity to visit our booth where they can review course material, meet the teacher, and ask questions. I feel that this event allows me to begin building relationships with parents and students before they are a part of my classroom.

As I came into the role of CTE Project Team Leader this year I began by taking on a big task. Under the guidance of our CTE supervisor, my fellow team leader and I put together an information booth at the Waterford Chamber of Commerce Business Expo. We viewed the expo as a great way to show our CTE program off to the community and local business. Other than promoting our program and gather some information from local business we were not really sure what to expect. Not only did we put together a informative booth, but we also have built some strong relationships with local business that will be leading to future field trips and job shadows for our students.

Relation to Standards

My experience with parent teacher conferences, open house, 8th grade orientation, and the business expo relate to the following standards:
